Ransomware update

Clanwilliam Health and eHealth Ireland would like to offer some IT system security guidance in light of the widespread ransomware attack that has hit 74 countries since yesterday. For those unclear, Ransomware is malicious software that infects machines, locks them by encrypting data and then attempts to extort money to let users back in. Ransomware normally installs itself on a computer via a Trojan programme disguised as something innocent such as an email attachment/link or a fake software update. While there is no evidence that any health organisation within Ireland has been targeted, it is important that you take the following precautions to protect your data and business.

  • If you are still running a Windows XP machine do not turn this PC on as this operating system is extremely vulnerable to a ransomware attack
  • Ensure your anti-virus software is up to date
  • Ensure your back-ups are up to date
  • Ensure you are running the latest update of your Windows Operating System (OS) i.e. Vista, 7, 8.1 & 10
  • Be vigilant when opening any emails or attachments from sources that are not familiar to you
If you are concerned that a PC may be compromised, turn the machine off immediately and disconnect it from the network. These ransomware attacks can move across networks very quickly infecting multiple PC’s. Immediately contact your Clanwilliam Health Support Team or your hardware partner.

We would also encourage you to educate your work colleagues and team members on the guidelines above. If you have any concerns or need help and/or advice, please contact your normal Clanwilliam Health support team.

Kind regards,

Eileen Byrne, Managing Director, Clanwilliam Health

Richard Corbridge, CIO, eHealth Ireland
